Why go there

North Head Lookout allows you to enjoy magnificent views across Sydney Harbour, back towards Manly Cove and south, towards South Head.

A one kilometre-long paved pathway leads to the lookout, and includes interesting information about local plants and animals.

The site also has a rich military history; artillery batteries were established here to protect Sydney during the first and second world wars. You can explore the fortifications with a guide from the National Artillery Museum.

Don't miss

  • Sydney ferries on their journey between Manly and Circular Quay.
  • The sensory experience at North Head lookout - this can be overwhelming as the often blustery southern winds rush up over the sheer cliff face with salt laden winds.
  • Whale-watching from the lookout. Keep an eye out for whales on their annual migration along the coast of New South Wales.

How to get there

Public transport

Take the ferry to Manly Wharf and then Sydney Buses Route 135 to the lookout. Check the availability of a low floor bus at Sydney Buses.

You should also advise Sydney buses of your destination as the bus doesn't always travel all the way to the lookout.

You can book a wheelchair accessible taxi by phoning 8332 0200.

Darley Road leads from Manly to North Head Scenic Drive. The parking area has two dedicated wheelchair-accessible parking spaces. Parking is ticketed.
